Montefalco wines come from Umbria, central Italy. The vineyard area covered by the Montefalco DOC title (which was made official in 1979) surrounds the communes of Montefalco and Bevagna, a half-hour drive south-east of Perugia. This area is steeped in grape-growing and wine-making traditions. The DOC laws were adapted to allow for the establishment of the Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG title in 1992, but also to ensure a presence was maintained for the other wines produced.

Just two wines are produced under DOC regulations; one red, one white, and both based on traditional Umbrian grape varieties. The red Sagrantino grape features in the standard rosso wine but Sangiovese is the predominant grape (it must make up a minimum of 70%). The riserva wine must have been aged for 17 months.

The white bianco is typically made in a crisp, dry style, and is made from a blend of Grechetto, Trebbiano Toscano and up to 15% other local varieties.
